For a project at Schiphol Airport we were asked to supply materials, among other things prefabricated frames, to Winthrop.
Winthrop is founded and managed by engineers, headquartered in Ireland and is delivering throughout Europe.
Winthrop specialises in Turnkey Data Centre Solutions that are delivered faster, leaner & smarter, whilst continuing to deliver Mechanical & Electrical solutions to the Commercial, Industrial and Pharmaceutical sectors.
Established on the principle of knowledge-based solutions, they have grown to become one of the leading and most trusted companies in our sector.
We were first introduced to Winthrop by Geberit, back in 2016 when Winthrop was working at a Datacenter project in the Amsterdam Schiphol Area and was looking for a reliable partner for the delivery of Geberit products such as Geberit HDPE, Mapress Copper, Mapress Stainless Steel and Sanitary. The collaboration continued and intensified on every new Datacenter and phase that was built in the area and we worked together for realizing a Datacenter in the surroundings of Munich, Germany.
Today’s flat roofs support an ever-increasing amount of equipment and it is important that the rooftop supports are long-lasting and keep the roof membrane intact. Due to increasing complexity, you might not be able to solve rooftop-related challenges on your own and that’s where Walraven comes in. Walraven’s rooftop solutions offer time and cost savings as well as being versatile, durable and non-penetrative.
Walraven has experience designing and delivering a wide range of rooftop installations which has allowed them to develop knowledge and best practice in the areas of engineering, safety and business case development. What’s more, they offer technical advice and support from the design phase through to installation on site.
AHU’s(= Air Handling Units) condition and distribute air within a building. They take fresh ambient air from outside, clean it, heat it or cool it, maybe humidify it and then force it through some ductwork around to the designed areas within a building. Most units will have an additional duct run to then pull the used dirty air out of the rooms, back to the AHU, where a fan will discharge it back to atmosphere. Some of this return air might be recirculated back into the fresh air supply to save energy. Otherwise, where that isn’t possible, thermal energy can be extracted and fed into the fresh air intake. AHU’s are usually located on the roof or in the basement, at the AMS project in the Amsterdam Schiphol area they are located on the roof of the building. The AHU’s come from an external party.
To support the AHU’s and disburden the roof Winthrop was looking for frames, they have asked us for help with designing and prefabrication of the frames. That’s where we contacted our longtime partner Walraven BIS to make use of their years of experience. They have made the designs for each AHU frame and when approved by Winthrop produced the frames at their Prefab facility. The Strut rails were cut to the designed length, capped and the connection pieces were mounted to them, accompanied by a label for each AHU. The loose materials (Yeti Feet, bolts, nuts, washers etc.) were supplied in large pallet boxes. The frames and materials were brought to site where they were lifted straight to the rooftop for installment.
